As the new school year rolls around, we would like to highlight the Ecumenical Chaplaincy at the University of Saskatchewan, which is a collaboration between the United, Presbyterian, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. Currently the chaplain is Rev. George Hind.
On Tuesdays throughout the school year, the Ecumenical Chaplaincy offers a weekly Faith-Talk followed by dinner. Each week’s dinner is from a different culture, with vegetarian and Halal options available. The Faith-Talk is conversation-based and begins with an opening question based on the day’s theme. Faith-talk also includes lessons on scripture, conversation about global and local concerns, and community prayer. In the spring, the Chaplaincy holds a weekly barbecue before taking a break for the summer. Dinners and barbecues often have over 60 students in attendance, with many being international students.
The Faith-Talks and dinners are welcome to anyone who would like to participate, and can be a great way for students to find connections with each other. Students who choose to attend are not required to attend both events, and do not have to belong to a specific faith tradition. Faith-Talk and dinners are held at the Lutheran Campus Centre on 1302 College Drive and will resume on August 23. Faith-Talks usually begin at 5:30 and dinners at 6:00. Additionally, the Faith Leaders on campus host Good Breakfast on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 8:00-9:00. Good Breakfast is hosted at the USask Community Centre (Marquis 104). Good Breakfast is supported by generous donations of baking from local congregations and a grant from Nutrien.
