All welcome! \nJesus and the Marginalized: Jesus Christ for Koreans in The United Church of Canada\, co-authored by Rev. Dr. Ohwang Kwon\, and Dr. Don Schweitzer\, explores the meaning of Jesus for Koreans in the United Church of Canada\, and in the Canadian context. The authors discuss the marginality that Koreans experience in Canada and also examines how Jesus enables Koreans to withstand this\, and live prophetically in their liminal situation. Dr Ohwang Kwon\, MDiv\, PhD\, is currently minister at the United Churches in Stettler\, Erskine and Big Valley\, Alberta. We only ask that you not post the Zoom information to social media or other public places; please share it by email only. \nThe extreme violence of Sunday September 4 in the James Smith Cree Nation and Weldon communities will be with us always. It rests with the memories of those lost\, those injured\, the trauma in the affected communities\, and so many questions about causes\, prevention\, and different paths into a future with less violence. \nWhile these questions don’t have answers or solutions\, we know that sitting with trauma and distress\, and supporting one another for the long term\, are key to healing. He has also been Associate Director of the Canadian Centre for Ecumenism\, sessional lecturer at the Institut de pastorale des Dominicains\, and Assistant to the General Secretary of the Assemblée des évêques catholiques du Québec. He is author of Greening Your Church and Prendre soin de la Création (Novalis\, 2014) and a co-author of Les pages vertes de la Bible (Novalis\, 2012). \nRev. Dr. Sandra Beardsall is an ordained minister in The United Church of Canada\, with pastoral experience in Newfoundland\, Labrador\, and Ontario\, including a United/Anglican shared ministry parish prior to her faculty appointment at St. Andrew’s College. Her teaching\, research\, and writing bring together historical\, pastoral\, and ecumenical concerns in the service of congregational ministry in prairie and western contexts and the search for Christian unity. She serves as a member of the World Council of Churches’ Faith & Order Commission and has been member of the Anglican-United Church dialogue and the Roman Catholic-United Church dialogue. Together with Mitzi Budde and William McDonald\, she is author of Daring to Share: Multi-Denominational Congregations in the United States and Canada (2018). \nCarla Leon is New Initiatives Manager\, The EDGE Network\, United Church of Canada. She firmly believes that churches are the backbone of the neighbourhood and the social innovation ecosystem. After receiving an MBA from the University of British Columbia she launched a social enterprise in 2009\, hiring marginalized people\, and is the co-founder of an e-learning organization that has helped over 100\,000 small-business owners. She currently works as a consultant for The United Church of Canada having launched their innovation grant program and numerous other initiatives including the Social Innovation Challenge\, a mentoring network\, and a savings platform for churches. Sometimes\, icebergs that look far away from each other on the surface can bump into each other under the water – sometimes gently\, sometimes causing damage. \nFor our coffee and chai conversation this month\, we are going to explore the cultural iceberg that we call the clergy collar.  On the surface\, it might seem like a small thing\, a symbol of office that some clergy intentionally wear and others do not.  Some church members and people in the general public are comforted by it\, others are puzzled by it\, others are traumatized by it.  Some clergy are comfortable wearing it\, and others are not.  All of our responses to this visible symbol of office are informed by our values\, our histories\, our stories\, our power in society – those often unseen things that exist beneath the water lines of our lives.  Let’s get together for meaningful conversation\, and explore who we are as an intercultural community\, through the lens of the cultural iceberg we call the clergy collar. Here’s one suggested reading\, which may reflect the views of many in the church. And we’ll explore more views together.
