SUMMARY:Annual Gathering of United Network for Justice and Peace in Palestine and Israel (UNJPPI)
DESCRIPTION:In line with our United Church call to ‘Bold Discipleship\, Deep Spirituality\, Daring Justice’\, the theme of this year’s UNJPPI Gathering is “Responding to a Cry for Hope”. That is the Call which was issued in 2019 by Kairos Palestine and Palestinian Christians. \nThe UNJPPI Gathering will be in London\, Ontario from May 6 to 8\, with a community event at King’s College on May 5. \nWorking in the spirit of decolonization\, most of our leadership will be Palestinian as we try to decolonize our work and listen to Palestinians talk to us out of their experience. They include:\n• Yara Shufani – a Palestinian Canadian on “Unity Uprisings 2021 – A Year Later”\n• Shadia Qubti – whose home is Nazareth and who has been studying in Canada since 2020. “Peace-building beyond dipping humus”.\n• Amal Alhaddad – who lives in Victoria and has recently emigrated from Gaza.\n• Rev. Dr. Munther Isaac\, from Bethlehem\, in via technology speaking on “Jesus’ call to be peace-builders”\n• Dr. Gabor Mate will also address our gathering by zoom on “Would you rather be illusioned or see things as they really are”.\n• Mariam Barghouti – a journalist from Ramallah on “What is happening right now? How voices of Palestinians are being silenced”. \nWe will learn together from what our resource people have to say as well as each participant\, as we share our experiences\, insights and understanding. \nWe hope to be encouraged and re-vitalized in our support of human rights for Palestinians and justice and peace for Israelis and Palestinians. \nFor more information\, check the Gathering website at unjppi.ca or email George Bartlett at g.bartlett@sympatico.ca.

Once thought to be a concern only for military veterans and first responders\, the impact of trauma on ‘ordinary’ people is being recognized as we move through a global disaster together. In this session we will explore what constitutes trauma and how it impacts our lives in community.\n\nMichele Rowe previously worked as a Corrections Worker\, in community development in the core of Saskatoon\, and as an educator and curriculum developer in Indigenous and non-Indigenous colleges before Jesus ruined her life in the best possible way and she answered the call to ordered ministry. A lifelong learner\, Michele has completed training related to mental health and addictions recovery and support\, grief and loss recovery\, and trauma support. She is grateful to live in God’s country and minister alongside the grace-filled people of Maple Creek United Church and the surrounding community.\n\n“Practically Prophetic” is a webinar series focused on tools & tips for our UCC ministry together. Think of it as Com-Ed (Community Education) for all: speakers\, presentations\, and panel discussions related to just about anything & everything in the vibrant faith-life of the church.  Practically Prophetic is a cool collaboration of Living Skies Region Faith Formation (UCC)\, St. Andrew’s College\, and the Centre for Christian Studies.

DESCRIPTION:  \nWe the Board of Regina Native Outreach Ministry invite the people of Living Skies Regional Council to participate in a Traditional Feast we would like to hold for United Church members. It is meant as a thank you to all those who have supported our ministry over the years.  We are asking your participation as we can not do it alone. \nThere may be some traditional teachings during the feast.  Our leading Elder will be Kokum Bea (Beatrice Laframboise).  I Rev. Deb have chosen Kokum Bea as it is my belief our woman were once the leaders in our communities before colonization\, Kokum Bea agrees with me that as woman we need to take back what was taken from our people in various areas of our Traditional Ways. \nThe Feast: June 4\, 2022 @ 1:00pm \nWhere:      Wascana Park across from Saskatchewan Museum \nWhat is a Traditional Feast?\nA Traditional feast is a celebration of various important events within a community: \nthe birth of a child \nthe death of a person \nthe anniversary of the death of a person (held 4 years in a row after the death\, the 4th year includes a give away) \nthe accomplishment of a person or the community (we have accomplished much with your support) \nWhat does a Traditional Feast entail? \nThe gathering of a community (you & us)\, all in the community come together with food and ceremony lead by an Elder. The food is prepared by the women of the community\, it is laid out by the men of the community. \nCallout to the men\nWe need 9 men from the church communities to be servers of the food. There are certain details these men need to know in the duties as server. Please send me names from your community so I can meet with them at least a week before the feast to give instruction. (306) 519-7840 or glammergirl@live.com \nA word to the women\nWomen\, please wear a long skirt that reaches between your knees and ankles or down to your ankle\, it doesn’t necessarily have to be a ribbon skirt. It is important that if you sit on the ground in your skirt that you either sit with your legs straight out or both turned to the side. do not sit with your legs crossed.  The Old Lady (great-grandmother) taught my sisters and I that. If a woman sits with her legs crossed she is opening herself to evil/bad things. If you are Two Spirit or LBGTQIA you are invited to wear a skirt or not as you wish\, and to choose where you sit. \nFoods Needed\nNo pork allowed \nSoup: 6-8 pots \nBannock: if you know how to make feel free to bring it. I will likely make both oven and frybread \nWild Berries: saskatoons\, raspberries\, blueberries\, cooked\, I will try get chokecherries and cook them \nFruit: Apples\, Oranges\, Bananas (possibly 2 boxes of each) \nBig Bowls of Canned Fruit: Mixed\, Peaches\, Pears\, Mandarin Oranges \nCrackers: 6-8 boxes \nCandies: For the Children\, to be all put in a bin to pass out \nTea: A few pots \nBottled Water or canned pop any flavor \nThere a few traditional dishes also\, I will get those together \nPlease feel free to call or email me if you have questions \nRev. DESCRIPTION:On June 11\, Grace-Westminster United Church will present historical walking tours to mark the 140th anniversary of this Saskatoon church and the surrounding neighborhood. Along the tour path\, actors will play the roles of people from the congregation’s early days. As a finale to the event\, Pamela Haig Bartley will present a short play about temperance advocate\, Grace Fletcher and her conflict with her husband and the authorities over the “demon rum”. It is of note that the Grace in the church’s name celebrates the spirit of this indominable woman.\nCome for an afternoon of humour and history\, story and song.
