SUMMARY:Learning gathering on unmarked burials
DESCRIPTION:Our Sacred Responsibilities: learning from the Unmarked Burials report and challenging settler denial. \nAll people of all backgrounds welcome to this day-long learning gathering\, open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. We will focus somewhat on the United Church’s responsibilities\, but all backgrounds are welcome as a full part of the day\, and we will not focus only on the United Church. \nTogether we will learn about the recent report on unmarked burials; explore what reparations means; learn about the problem of settler denialism; and practice together how to challenge it. Speakers and knowledge keepers will help us\, and all who come are full participants in helping each other and our communities create a good path forward. \nCommunity\, prayer\, ceremony\, and cultural supports will be part of our day. A separate support space is also available to First Nations\, Métis and Inuit\, respecting that this is a hard topic. \nPractical details\nPlease click here to register. Our day will include (among other things): prayer and ceremony; an overview of key parts of the report on unmarked burials; reflection from a survivor; what do we and the report mean by “reparations”; what is settler denial\, and how can we challenge it? \nOur space: The building is fully accessible\, and we will be using mics to assist those with hearing needs. Smudging and medicines will be part of our day. There is some parking on site\, and transit a block away. DESCRIPTION:MultiFaith Saskatchewan and Eastside United Church host the screening of this important documentary which tells the story of an ill fated experiment in the Peepeekisis Cree Nations over 100 years ago.  The then self serving Indian Agent developed a scheme to create the File Hills Farm Colony and recruited young people from other indigenous nations to work in this colony.  His experiment failed and the consequences of the project created divisions in the Peepeekisis community that linger to this day although the people there work to overcome the division. The documentary is produce by Birdsong and is written and directed by Mark Dieter.

Deb have chosen Kokum Bea as it is my belief our woman were once the leaders in our communities before colonization\, Kokum Bea agrees with me that as woman we need to take back what was taken from our people in various areas of our Traditional Ways. \nThe Feast: June 4\, 2022 @ 1:00pm \nWhere:      Wascana Park across from Saskatchewan Museum \nWhat is a Traditional Feast?\nA Traditional feast is a celebration of various important events within a community: \nthe birth of a child \nthe death of a person \nthe anniversary of the death of a person (held 4 years in a row after the death\, the 4th year includes a give away) \nthe accomplishment of a person or the community (we have accomplished much with your support) \nWhat does a Traditional Feast entail? \nThe gathering of a community (you & us)\, all in the community come together with food and ceremony lead by an Elder. The food is prepared by the women of the community\, it is laid out by the men of the community. \nCallout to the men\nWe need 9 men from the church communities to be servers of the food. There are certain details these men need to know in the duties as server. Sometimes\, icebergs that look far away from each other on the surface can bump into each other under the water – sometimes gently\, sometimes causing damage. \nFor our coffee and chai conversation this month\, we are going to explore the cultural iceberg that we call the clergy collar.  On the surface\, it might seem like a small thing\, a symbol of office that some clergy intentionally wear and others do not.  Some church members and people in the general public are comforted by it\, others are puzzled by it\, others are traumatized by it.  Some clergy are comfortable wearing it\, and others are not.  All of our responses to this visible symbol of office are informed by our values\, our histories\, our stories\, our power in society – those often unseen things that exist beneath the water lines of our lives.  Let’s get together for meaningful conversation\, and explore who we are as an intercultural community\, through the lens of the cultural iceberg we call the clergy collar. Here’s one suggested reading\, which may reflect the views of many in the church. And we’ll explore more views together.

DESCRIPTION:The STU Library\, in partnership with Library Services for Saskatchewan Aboriginal Peoples (LSSAP) is hosting an Aboriginal Storytelling event. \nThe guest speaker is Marilyn Poitras\, director of the Indigenous Law Centre at the University of Saskatchewan\, who will be discussing the tradition of storytelling. \nThis event will be hosted over Zoom\, so anyone who wishes to join the call should email help.stulibrary@usask.ca to register in advance of the event.
